Q. What is Chinese Domain Name?

A. Chinese Domain Name is one of Internationalized domain names that contains Chinese characters. Chinese Domain Name complies with RFC3454. RFC3490. RFC3491. RFC3492 published in March 2003 by IETF. As one of basic Internet services, Chinese Domain Name can provide application services such as WWW, Email, FTP in Chinese operation systems.


Q. What kind of Chinese Domain Name can be registered?

A. A Chinese Domain Name must contain at least one Chinese character. You may choose Chinese characters, ASCII letters (A-Z same as a-z), numbers (0-9) or hyphen (-) to compose your Chinese Domain Name. The length shall be limited within 20 characters (letters). There are ".CN", ".中国", ".公司" and ".网络" are currently available for registration. For example:

Q. What's the differences between Chinese domain name, CN domain name and Internet Keyword?

A.
Chinese domain name and CN domain name belong to the domain name system. Chinese domain name conforms to the international standards concerned and is similar with English domain name in use. As one kind of domain name, Chinese domain name supports virtual host and email, etc. via DNS resolution.

    Internet Keyword, a newly emerged technique for visiting network names, is a convenient way to realize the visitation of the browser by establishing a corresponding relationship between Internet Keyword and URL. It's an access technology based on DNS.

Is the registration of Chinese Domain Name available for individuals?

A. Currently the registration is not yet open to individuals.


Q. How to register Chinese Domain Name

A. CNNIC accredited ChineseDomain Name registrars are responsible for providing Chinese Domain Name registration services. You may select one of them, and go to their websites to proceed with the online registration.


Q. What kind of Chinese Domain Names are not allowed to be registered?

A. 
1. Contents that are opposed to the basic principles formulated in the Constitution;
    2. Contents that disclose the State secrets, aim to jeopardize the security of the State and overthrow the State power, and attempt to destroy the unification of the country;
    3. Contents that are designed to harm the glory and interests of the State;
    4. Contents that instigate national animosity, national discrimination, and destroy national unity;
    5. Contents that do damage to religious policies of the State and propaganda heresy and feudal superstition;
    6. Contents that disseminate rumors, disturb social order, and destroy social stability;
    7. Contents that disseminate obscenity, eroticism, gambling, violence, murder, terror or induce crimes;
    8. Contents that insult or calumniate other people, and infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of other people;
    9. Contents that are forbidden by laws, rules and regulations.


Q. Issues of traditional and simplified Chinese characters

A. 1. The registration system can automatically convert and allocate the traditional and simplified forms of the registered Chinese Domain Names.
    2. Registrants may also manually submit the full traditional/simplified forms of the registered names. Then the registration system will stop the automatic process.
    3. One Chinese Domain Name may contain at most 3 versions: full traditional, full simplified and registrant specified (mixed) form.
    4. If the registrant submits full traditional or full simplified form, then the Chinese Domain Name has at most two forms.
    5. If the full traditional form is totally same with the full simplified form, then the Chinese Domain Name has only one form.


Q. Registration Period

A. The registration period refers to the actual usage period of a registered Domain Name. Since Mar. 17, 2005 20:10, the upper limit of the registration period for Chinese Domain Name was extended from 5 years to 10 years. The actual operation period of a domain name shall not exceed 10 years.


Q. When will the registered Chinese Domain Name be available for resolution?

A. 
A registered Chinese Domain Name will be instantly recorded in the Chinese Domain Name registration database, and will be available for resolution after 24 hours.


Q. Renewal

A. Renew a Domain Name can be done after the registration. The upper limit is 10 years.


Q. Deletion

A.
In each year, the ending date for renewal is same with the original registration date. For those who fail to renew the domain name before the deadline, the resolution service will be suspended. For domain name fail to be renewed in the following 15 days, the registry will delete the name.


Q. How to change, transfer and deletion a Chinese Domain Name?

A.
Registrants may submit the application; the corresponding Chinese Domain Name registrars will process with the operation.


Q. Under what kind of circumstances the domain name’s registrar can not be changed?

A. 1. No more than 60 days after the domain name registration;
    2. No more than 15 days to the domain name renewal date;
    3. The domain name keeps in the state of registration charge delay;
    4. The subject identification of the domain name holder is not defined or in dispute;
    5. The domain name is being handled by judiciary, arbitration body and dispute resolution institution;


Q. Can a Chinese Domain Name be corresponding to multiple IP addresses or DNS servers?

A.
Yes.


Q. Types of restrictions
A.
Prohibited:

In accordance with "China Internet Domain Name Regulations", any organization or individual must not register or use domain names that violate the interests of the state, the society and the public. Any word of this kind must not be registered as Chinese Domain Names.
Restricted:
To ensure the stability and flexibility of domain name system, protect public interests, CNNIC limits the registration of certain words. When apply for registering restricted names, people shall apply to registrars for registration; CNNIC will review the application and make decisions according to practical needs of DNS or the specific situation of the applicant.


Q. How to apply for restricted Chinese Domain Name?

A.
1. The applicant mails the application material to a registrar.
   
          The application material includes:

  • "Application Form for Domain Name Reservation" with official seal;
  • Copies of business license;
  • Copies of trade mark registration certificate (only required when apply for registering trade mark as domain name)

2. CNNIC reviews the application

The registrar forwards the application material to CNNIC;
After the review, CNNIC will transmit the domain name to the registrar’s database within 3 working days after receiving the application material.

Q. Is Chinese Domain Name registration certificate available?

A. IE 7.0 can fully support Chinese domain names. For instance, users can visit Tsinghua University by inputting “清华大学.cn” in the address bar of IE 7.0, then users can be directed to the website of  Tsinghua University.

There is a little bit difference for previous versions of IE other than IE 7.0 to visit Chinese domains. For instance, a user who is surfing with an early version of IE has to input “http://北京大学.cn”  instead of “北京大学.cn” in the address bar of IE if the user intends to visit the website of Peking University.

Note: In order to facilitate users with direct visit to Chinese domain names, it is advisable that users install CNNIC Official Client-end CDN Software before surfing. This software can be downloaded on CNNIC website.


Q. How can I use Chinese Domain Name after installing "Official Client-end CDN Software"?

A. Input the Chinese Domain Name in your IE address bar, you may access the corresponding website. For instance:

Q. What kind of Chinese Domain Name does "Official Client-end CDN Software" support?

A. It supports Chinese Domain Name with the end of ".cn", ".中国"(China), ".公司"(company) and ".网络" (Network). For instance:

Q. The usage of Chinese.公司. Chinese.网络

A. Every registrant of ".公司" Chinese Domain Name will be presented with a Chinese Domain Name with suffix of ".公司.cn";
For registrant of ".网络" Chinese Domain Name, one Chinese Domain Name with suffix of ".网络.cn" will be presented;
When input domain names, people may also add ".cn" behind ".公司" or ".网络" to access corresponding websites.


Q. Which Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) support Chinese domain name?

A.
Foxmail 5.0 supports Chinese domain name.
    Mozilla supports Chinese domain name since its 1.4 version.
    Tencent (QQ) supports Chinese domain name from its QQ2003IIIBeta2 version.
    Netscape supports Chinese domain name since its 7.1 version.
    Opera (including IDN in version 7)


Q.
How can the registrants activate their Chinese Domain Names?

A. Same as ASCII domain names, the registrant need to make CDN configurations to their DNS, WWW and Email servers before use. Simply, the configuration process of Chinese Domain Names is similar to that of ASCII domain names. However, since Chinese characters are not yet recognized in configuration files, they need to be encoded to Punycode strings before editing. You may choose one of the following two methods to activate your Chinese Domain Name:

Method 1 (Recommended)
1) Set the Chinese Domain Name registration DNS server to be the resolution server provided by the registrar;
2) Entrust the configuration of the Chinese Domain Name resolution server to the registrar;
3) Activate Chinese Domain Name;
Note: Virtual host users' DNS resolution servers are configured by their service provider.

Method 2

1) Set the Chinese Domain Name registration DNS server to be self operated Chinese Domain Name resolution server;
2) Self-configure the resoluton server.


Q. How to resolve Chinese Domain Name disputes?

A. According to "CNNIC Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy", all disputes relating to Chinese Domain Name shall be resolved by Chinese Domain Name dispute resolution institutes.

The "Official Client-end CDN Software" supports full-length character input, such as "北京大学. cn".It also supports half-length character input, such as "北京大学.cn",equivalent in effect.
